DEMOCRACY EMBRACED

The Summer Games in South Korea had far greater significance than simply being a huge sporting event with the country embracing political change and democracy. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea boycotted the event – and was joined by Cuba, Ethiopia and Nicaragua. But the 1998 Games were regarded as a huge success with 159 countries participating and 52 different nations winning medals.
